All inmates are expected to maintain a job assignment. Many job assignments are controlled through a Performance Pay System, which provides monetary payment for work. Federal Prison Industries has a separate pay scale. Unit Managers approve job changes and see that the changes are posted on the Daily Change Sheet.
Institution maintenance jobs are usually the first assignment an inmate receives. These might include work in Food Service, in the unit, or in a maintenance shop. FCI Beckley has a significant number of inmate jobs in the furniture factory operated by the Federal Prison Industries, also known as UNICOR. Inmates wishing to work in UNICOR are placed on a waiting list for factory employment. UNICOR employs and trains inmates through the operation of factories producing high-quality products and services for the Federal Government. UNICOR earnings fund other inmate programs, as well as pre-industrial training to prepare inmates for employment.
