Education Programs


The Education Department hours of operation are listed on the Education Bulletin Board. When visiting the Education Department, you are expected to follow the
rules and regulations posted on the bulletin board.

Literacy Program


A sentenced inmate confined to a Federal institution who does not have a verified General Education Development (GED) or high school diploma is required to attend an Adult Literacy Program for a minimum of 240 hours or until a GED is obtained. Sick time, furloughs or other absences will not be counted as attendance toward the 240 hour period. If an inmate stops participation in the Literacy program and if they are in service of a VCCLEA or a PLARA sentence structure, they will lose good-time on their good-time award date.

A $25 dollar award is credited to inmates commissary accounts upon earning their GED diploma. Certificates are issued for each tier of completion within the literacy program. Other incentives include student of the week and other certificates of recognition,

Ausencias por enfermedad u otros ausencias no se contaran como hacia las 240 horas.


English As A Second Language Program


United States citizens who demonstrate limited English proficient that are confined in Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions are required to attend an English As A Second Language (ESL) program until they function at the equivalence of the eighth grade level in competency skills. Non- United States citizens are also encouraged to attend but are not considered to be mandatory students.

Apprenticeship/Vocational Programs and Post Secondary Education


A variety of apprenticeship programs are available in the FCI: Animal Handler, Baker, Career Resource Technician, Cook, Dental Assistant, Legal Secretary, Stationary Engineer, Teacher’s Aide, and Tool Machine Shop Set-up Operator. One apprenticeship program is available for the FPC: Dental Assistant. Additionally, the FCI has two vocational programs: Culinary Arts and Puppies Behind Bars.

A one year certificate is available for eligible inmates. Please check with your Education Representative for qualifications for these programs.

Adicionalmenta F.P.C. tiene un programa vocacional para entrenamiento a perros de compañia para personas privadas de la vista.
